Ethnomathematics—we all have some notions of what it is, but should it be influencing school mathematics? This paper considers a justification for the influence from a constructivist perspective, and considers the implications of enactivism and other ways of thinking on ethnomathematics. Ethnomathematics describes an area of informal mathematical activity and practice but it is not necessarily either anti-racist or part of mathematics education - it can be part of anthropology. Hence the identification is inappropriate. PART 1 - ETHNOMATHEMATICS: THE CONCEPT AND A PROPOSED DEFINITION The term ethnomathematics, although as yet undefined by the Oxford English Dictionary (Simpson, 1991) or other standard dictionaries, has been frequently used by the anthropological literature and by popular writings on culture. Abstract. This chapter discusses scholarly work in the field of ethnomathematics from three perspectives that seem to encompass much of the current work in the field: challenging Eurocentrism in mathematics; ethnomathematics praxis in the curriculum; and ethnomathematics as a field of research. Ethnomathematics, as a field of inquiry, began in about 1970, although the term itself did not come into use until about 10 years later.

Secondly ethnomathematics itself as a research field rejects any dogmatic position, and is aware of contradictions implicated in their pedagogical aims. ethnomathematics becomes another of the many “didactical tools” that abound in research.

It advertised a February 21 “Pathway to Math Equity Micro-Course” that espouses “ethnomathematics” in order to begin “dismantling racism in mathematics,” because mathematics reflects “white supremacy culture.” The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) recently encouraged teachers to register for training that encourages "ethnomathematics" and argues, among other things, that White supremacy manifests itself in the focus on finding the right answer.
